"A Gay Cuban Activist in Exile: Reinaldo Arenas"

Wednesday, November 7
10 a.m. Buttrick G-4

Between Reinaldo Arenas's arrival in the United States in 1980 and his suicide a decade later, the Cuban exile produced his most mature writing. In his book, A Gay Cuban Activist in Exile, Ocasio explores Arenas's bold criticism of the Castro regime, including his fierce advocacy of homosexuality and his willingness to alienate Latino and Latin American audiences in order to remain true to his self-proclaimed identity.

Thank you for this very interesting lecture today, I really enjoyed it! I had heard about Reinaldo Arenas before, but I didn't have any background knowledge, so it was nice hear a little bit about his life.

Rafa: thanks for giving us that excellent presentation. I was particularly struck by the use of sections of Schnabel's film. I got a great sense of the personality of Reinaldo Arenas through the short snippet of him telling me about his strained food, and seeing his refrigerator and his garden, and I was physically effected by the depiction of the "drawer"/torture room--especially coupled with the statement of his loss of pride. THANK you!

Disfrute mucho tu presentacion sobre Reinaldo Arenas. Ademas del interes que me has creado en las obras de Arenas, ahora tambien estoy curiosa sobre, por ejemplo, las obras de otro intelectual cubano, Jose Lezama Lima.
